Social Accountability in Medicine

Social Accountability in Medicine is a four-week community-based placement for third-year medical students, as part of which they work with over 120 partner organisations across the South Yorkshire region. Organisations benefit from insights and resources generated by the students (often in the context of specific well-defined projects), while students improve their ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and their understanding of the various social determinants of health.

In this film, we hear from Dr Joanne Thompson (the academic lead for the programme), participating medical students, and community partners Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, who have been providing vital services and support to people with learning disabilities and autism and their families since 1951.
