A Weighty Issue
Exploring the impact of obesity stigma on health & wellbeing
Multiple studies have found that experiencing weight stigma negatively impacts well-being and health behaviours, and reduces motivation to engage in physical activity and increases snacking.
This short film looks at the 'A Weighty Issue' project and performance - a one-woman theatre show written and directed by Charlie Barnes of Dead Earnest Theatre. The show is based on research by psychologists Dr Nicola Buckland and Dr Asha Akram, exploring the ways in which weight stigma damages the health and wellbeing of those who experience it.
Through challenging our preconceptions about weight and obesity, the performance aims to help us be more accepting of our own and others' weight, and to think twice before reinforcing unhelpful stereotypes.
