Deciphering the City - A Sheffield Urban Studies Project

A documentary film showing how the Sheffield 1900 model was created by Urban Studies students for the Sheffield School of Architecture diploma course.

Peter Blundell Jones (1949-2016) was a British architect, writer, and teacher, who taught at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture from 1994 to 2016.

In 1998 Peter Blundell Jones and PhD students created a new Sheffield-based Urban Studies module for the Sheffield School of Architecture diploma course.

This documentary film, produced in 2002, shows how students on this Urban Studies module researched old maps and material from the City Archives and Local Studies, and Sheffield museums in order to create a 1:500 scale model of Sheffield city centre as it stood in 1900.

A large section of the model is on display at Western Bank Library as part of the Peter Blundell Jones: Architecture, Landscape & the City exhibition which runs from 21 July - 14 December 2025.
