What Do Tuna Eat and Why Does It Matter for Conservation?

Former visitor Dr Saleh Aljaafari talks about how the NEOF Visitor Facility supported him in using genomics tools to understand the diet of endangered tuna species in the Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea.

Several tuna species are threatened by over-fishing. Understanding what species tuna feed on can help inform fisheries managers on how to best prioritise resources towards tuna conservation. Saleh used next generation sequencing to study the diet of two tuna species during his PhD. He received lab training and support with his data analyses from the Visitor Facility team.
