How Do We Build the Next Generation of Disabled Researchers?
What does it take to build a more inclusive research community? Sandeep Singh explores how disabled researchers can help shape the future of health research.
In this video, Sandeep Singh shares his work on Disability Matters, an international research programme exploring disability, health, and inclusion. His contribution focuses on an important question: how do we build a new generation of disabled and disability positive health researchers?
Drawing on his experiences as a researcher and advocate, Sandeep discusses the barriers that disabled people can face when entering and progressing through academic and research careers. He reflects on the importance of creating environments where disabled researchers are supported, valued, and able to shape research agendas from the outset.
The video highlights the need for mentoring, accessible opportunities, and meaningful involvement in research projects. It also explores how disability can bring valuable perspectives to health research, helping to ask different questions and develop more inclusive approaches to knowledge production.
As part of Disability Matters, this work looks beyond participation alone and considers how future generations of researchers can help transform the way health research is conducted. By investing in disabled researchers and disability positive research cultures, the project aims to create a stronger, more representative research community that better reflects the experiences and priorities of disabled people.
