Sounds of the Cosmos: Galaxies and the Universe

Explore galaxies, galaxy clusters and the Universe through expert astronomy, Gustav Holst's The Planets and spectacular images from NASA.

Part of Sounds of the Cosmos, Space Week
18 Sep 2014 20:33

Explore galaxies and the vast scale of the Universe through music, astronomy and extraordinary images of space.

Sounds of the Cosmos combines a filmed orchestral performance of Gustav Holst's The Planets with short talks that explore the science behind our Universe.

In the fifth chapter, Galaxies and the Universe, Professor Paul Crowther looks at the different types of galaxies found across space and explains how galaxies gather together in clusters.

He also explores the three dimensional structure of our local Universe, helping us understand where galaxies sit in relation to one another and the enormous distances between them.

Alongside Holst's music, the film features images captured by NASA spacecraft and observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Together, the science, music and images offer a different way to explore galaxies and our place in the Universe.
