Research Records #39 Professor Tony Ryan Interviews Professor Sheila Francis
Sheila is a Professor of Cardiovascular Biology and currently Faculty of Health Director of One University Strategy Delivery at The University of Sheffield.
Sheila grew up in Mid-Wales on a sheep farm attending the local primary school with only 20 other pupils before going to secondary school. There, the experience of numerous Eistedfoddau competitions prepared her for the rigours of academic life. Her PhD at the University of Manchester was where she developed a novel liposome formulation for a well-known toothpaste being named as an inventor on the worldwide patent.
She moved to Sheffield in 1990 for postdoctoral research in heart disease.
She was appointed to a lectureship in 1994 and took a sabbatical to be a Fulbright Scholar in MIT. She discovered that inflammation directed by a small protein called interleukin-1 normally involved in the fever response, causes fatty-fibrous thickening of artery walls.
