Protecting Built Heritage: Select Committee

Professor Vanessa Toulmin joined MPs to discuss why historic buildings matter, how to care for them and how they bring pride to communities.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Chair of the Morecambe Winter Gardens and Director of City, Culture and Public Engagement at the University of Sheffield, took part in a panel for the Culture, Media and Sport Committee in Parliament.

The Committee is exploring why historic buildings and places are important in the UK and what makes it hard to look after them. This includes how they are paid for, if funding is fair and works well, and if there are enough skilled people to carry out the specialist work needed.

MPs are also asking how heritage can help towns and cities to grow, bring new life to local areas, and give people a sense of pride in their community. A key focus is how local people can be supported to take care of the historic places around them.
