Palliative Care and Mesothelioma

This video shares Sheffield research on mesothelioma and palliative care. It explains what palliative care is and how it can support patients and families.

The video is based on findings from a research project undertaken by the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre (at the University of Sheffield) which explored palliative care needs in mesothelioma (a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos) and how Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialists meet those needs.

Find out more about the project here.

The research found that people living with mesothelioma and their families may feel a reluctance to explore palliative care options due to an assumption that it is only of use to people at the end of their lives. This means that people may lose out on
valuable support and care, which would help them to live as well as possible (for as long as possible).

The video aims to share key information about what palliative care is, address common misunderstandings, and explain how palliative care can help both people with mesothelioma and their families to receive the support and care they need.
