"Hello... I'm Here!" - Hospital Care Experiences with Vision Impairment

The video explains the award winning co-productive research undertaken to explore the experiences of acute hospital care for older people living with vision impairment.

The video introduces our co-productive research study, which aims to support dignified, supportive and enabling care giving for older people, whether they are fully sighted or have experienced sight loss.

The research included undergraduate students from the School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery, older people with vision impairment and Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB). Researchers Dr Gemma Arblaster and Dr Fiona Wilson describe their study, how they worked with students and people with lived experiences of sight loss and staying in hospital. They also describe their collaboration with Sheffield based artist Sarah Jane Palmer, who helped bring the study to different audiences through an immersive art installation and a Spielgeltent talk at the Festival of the Mind exhibition (2024).

The research won two awards in the Outstanding Partnership or Impact in Health / Welfare / Wellbeing category of the University of Sheffield Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards, 2025. As both the Overall winner and Early Career Researcher winner at these awards, Gemma and Fiona were given the opportunity to work with cinematographer and editor Will Armson, to create this video showcasing their research, collaborations and the ongoing impact of their research.
