Dr Tom Duggett is editing Radcliffe's The Romance of the Forest for publication as part of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ann Radcliffe.
Radcliffe's third novel received stellar reviews in the press, set the bar for 1790s Gothic writing, and, in many ways, is responsible for launching Radcliffe's career - but was the bar now set too high for even Radcliffe herself?
